In a frontal impact, as the body moves forward, the rubber on the HANS 'grips' the harness and actually pulls the HANS backwards tightening the tethers. This is why there appears to more movement of the head when sitting in the car. (Learned this at a dealer training session) There is a sled test video out that shows it well - just can't find it right now. Good comparison article!
